今回取り上げるのはconglomerate / kənglάm(ə)rət /です。con-とあるので、「一緒の」といった意味を含んだ単語になるかと思います。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「（物が集まって）丸く固まった,複合企業（体）の,(多くの要素から成っていて)まとまりのないもの」などといった意味がありました。またLDOCEにはa large business organization consisting of several different companies that have joined togetherやa rock consisting of different sizes of stones held together by clayやa group of things gathered togetherと記載されていました。
ラテン語で「球」を意味するglo(b)-が語源となってできているようです。
ちなみによく聞く多国籍企業もこの単語を使ったa multinational conglomerateという表現で表せるということもわかりました。
小学校の頃になんてすごいロボットなんだと目を見張る思いでアシモを見ていたので、開発中止と聞いてなんだかショックです。(rain)
