気になった単語は”solicit” /səlísɪt/です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「...を訪問販売する、悪事に誘い込む、〈売春婦が〉客を引く」と載っていました。あまり良い表現ではなさそうですね。この単語は”soli”と”cit”の２つに分かれます。前者は「激しく動かす」を意味するラテン語の”sollus”が語源です。また、後者も「呼ぶ」を意味するラテン語の”citare”から由来しています。これらの意味を合わせると「懇請する」という意味に近くなります。 “citare”が語源の単語は他にも多く存在し、”cite” “excite” “recitation”などはその例です。(Large Lake)
