temblor 復習

熊本地震発生から２年が経過しました。

KUMAMOTO--Memorial ceremonies were held here April 14 to mark the second anniversary of powerful earthquakes that struck the region, leaving dozens dead.
The two temblors claimed 50 lives due to houses collapsing or because of landslides. Five more were killed in subsequent torrential rains.

今回はtemblor / témblɚ / です。初めて見る単語だったので調べてみました。
『ロングマン英英辞典』では、“an earthquake”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）には「(米)地震」とありました。

続いて、語源はスペイン語のtemblarから由来しています。temblarはラテン語から由来しており、timere(恐れる)が原義になっています。

ちなみにtemblorとearthquakeの意味の違いはないそうです。(amphibian)
