アメリカのプロ野球チーム、エンゼルスの大谷翔平選手がキャンプに合流するためにアメリカへ飛び立ちました。
Japanese professional baseball star Shohei Ohtani has left for the United States to play Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Angels.
Ohtani signed with the MLB club in December after his Japanese team, Nippon-Ham Fighters, put him up for bid, when the posting system came into effect.
The 23-year-old pitcher and slugger continued training at a facility belonging to his Japanese club, before he left to join his new team.
A send-off ceremony was held for Ohtani at Narita Airport on Thursday.
He was given an airplane model from an airline company that has signed a support contract with him. He was also given a large crepe, as he likes sweets.
The 2-way player told reporters that he is highly motivated, because he is going onto the top stage. He also said that he wants to demonstrate what he has learned from his former coaches.

“put someone up for bid” を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると “put someone up for” で「〜をある候補として挙げる、〜をあることのために出資する」とありました。
大谷選手がメジャーに行くきっかけあるいは要因となった「ポスティング制度」について調べました。この制度は主にアメリカのメジャーリーグに参加の意欲を示した選手のためにその球団が、メジャー球団に向けその選手を上限2000万ドル (約20億円) を譲渡金として設定し売り込むという制度だとわかりました。
そして日本球団が設定した条件に合致したメジャーの球団との契約が交わされる形でその球団が独占交渉権利を獲得し、最終的に日本球団側に契約金が支払われるという訳です。しかしこの制度は選手に球団を選ぶ権利はなく、契約に際して複数の承諾がある場合は球団側が最終的に決定する立場にあるそうなのです。つまり少し悪い言い方になってしまいますが、球団側は選手をお金をもたらすまた与えるアイコンとして世に出しているということがわかります。したがって、「大谷選手を自分の団体の懐を蓄えるために出資する、入札させるためを大谷選手を候補に挙げる」と “put someone up for bid” を使って表現できることが頷けます。
大谷選手は日本時間の今朝アメリカに到着し、関係者に出迎えられただけでなく現地メディアも空港に居合わせていたそうです。(Hapidra)
