今回取り上げる単語は、horrendous /hɔːréndəs/ です。まず、意味を確認します。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館)でみると、「〈略式〉(1) 恐ろしい、とても怖い、(2) 非常に不愉快な ; むちゃくちゃな、(3) 巨大な、でっかい、そびえるような (時として過度で理不尽なくらい大きすぎることもある ) 」とあります。
また、語源は同書によると、「ラテン語 horrendus (毛を逆立てた) cf. horror, horrible 」となっています。
