MIYAZAKI--A news conference here on preventing infectious diseases turned into a frantic bug hunt after a tick possibly carrying a deadly virus escaped its befuddled handlers.
A dozen or so prefectural government officials and reporters ended up searching the news conference room where the tick was last seen on Sept. 4. Some got on their hands and knees to use sticky rollers in hopes of snaring the 2-millimeter-long bug. When that didn’t work, insecticide was sprayed to smoke out the tick.

“befuddled”/ bɪfˈʌdl /を取り上げます。fuddleなので，confuseと同じだろうとまず思いました。ただしそれに強意の接頭辞 beが付いていますので，「完全に，すっかり」的な意味が添加されるとも考えました。
そこで『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、やはり，「ひどく混乱した；正気を失った」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“completely confused”と定義されています。元になった動詞“fuddle”は，復習をしておきますと，「〈頭・人〉をぼうっとさせる、混乱させる；泥酔させる」という意味を持ちます。(Blue Sky)
