　少し前に，HMVは，今後数ヶ月でカナダの全店舗を閉鎖すると発表しました。突然の発表で，貯めていたポイントが使えないと困惑するユーザーが出てきているようです。

　今回取り上げる表現は，“pull the rug out from under”です。ここでは，“underneath”が用いられています。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を引いてみると，「〈人〉の計画を狂わせる」と「足元をすくう」といった語義が記載されていました。そのまま直訳すると，足元からじゅうたんを引き抜くで，そこから，意味が連想しやすいかもしれません。
　さらに，Merriam-Websterを確認すると，“to very suddenly take something needed or expected from (someone or something)”と定義されています。“very suddenly”とあるように，「急に」というニュアンスが含まれているようです。
