3-peat 復習

来年１月２、３日に行われる第９３回東京箱根間往復大学駅伝ですが、果たしてどの大学が勝利を手にするのでしょうか。巷では超高校級レベルのランナーが加入した東海大学に注目が集まっているようです（cf.「週刊新潮」）。

For a team under pressure, the Aoyama Gakuin University runners seem neither tense nor overly relaxed. At their training camp in Chiba Prefecture in early December, they were totally focused on one thing: running.

No university team has ever won the Tokyo-Hakone Intercollegiate Ekiden three years in a row as well as the Triple Crown — holding titles in the Hakone Ekiden, Izumo Ekiden and the All-Japan Collegiate Ekiden Championship — in the same season. Aoyama could be the first to accomplish such a historic feat, but senior and team captain Yuya Ando is keeping his cool.

“3-peat”を取り上げます。“three”と“repeat”が組み合わさったもので、『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(主に新聞用語で)3連覇する」という意味がありました。
peatはrepeatのことなので、「泥炭」という意味のあるpeatとはまた別のもので、three-peatの由来を調べてみると、シカゴ・ブルズの最初の3連覇達成を祝った際に用いられていることや、スリーピートの造語を作ったのはもともとLos Angeles Lakers でヘッドコーチをしていたパット・ライリーだという説もあり、確実な情報というものを判断できませんでしたが、バスケットから生まれた言葉であることは間違いないとわかりました。
three-peatで3連覇であれば、4連覇、5連覇はfour-peat、five-peatと使うことができるのかと思い、調べてみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典』には記載はありませんでしたが、Merriam-Websterでは“four-peat”の定義があり、“a fourth consecutive championship”とありました。またfour-peat、five-peatともに記事で使われていることもわかりました。(lua)
