Another Osprey followed. And after a third tilt-rotor aircraft took off, images of black smoke billowing from a university’s grounds in 2004 flashed in Yamauchi’s head.
Just days after an Osprey crash-landed off Nago in the prefecture, operations of the aircraft resumed, drawing outrage from Okinawans against the U.S. military and the Japanese government for going along with the U.S. plan.

今回取り上げる表現は、“billow”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈煙が〉≪…から≫もくもくと立ち上る(up)≪out of, from≫」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“if a cloud or smoke billows, it rises in a round mass”と定義されています。
“billow”の第１義には「〈カーテン・スカート・帆などが〉≪風で≫ふくらむ(out)≪in≫」という意味があります。“billow”の形容詞系の“billowy”には「大波の立つ、うねりの高い」などという意味があることから、今回の表現には物がうねっている様子も連想させる表現なのではないかと思いました。(Blue Sky)
