今回取り上げるのは、“godsend”という表現です。この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“something good that happens to you when you really need it”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「思わぬ幸福〔幸運〕、天のたまもの」といった意味が記載されていました。この語の表記からも上記のような意味がおおよそ予想できますと思います。ちなみに、“godsend”は中期英語で「神の託宣」を意味する語から由来しています(「Weblio英和辞典」)。
