Culling of 230,000 chickens begins

The Niigata prefectural government started to cull some 230,000 chickens in the small hours of Thursday at a farm in Joetsu, where the season’s second avian influenza outbreak in the prefecture was confirmed Wednesday.

Prefectural employees and Self-Defense Forces troops, mobilized for a disaster relief mission at the request of local authorities, will engage in the work around the clock until Sunday.

Because a highly pathogenic H5 flu virus was detected from chickens at the poultry farm, transfers of chickens and eggs are banned in nearby areas. Farms within 3 kilometers from the Joetsu farm will check whether their birds have been infected.

今回取り上げるのはpoultryです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「1（複数扱い）家禽類（肉や卵）を取るために飼う鶏、あひる、七面鳥など　2家禽の肉」とありました。2つ目は不可算名詞のときの意味になります。LDOCEでは “birds such as chickens and ducks that are kept on farms in order to produce eggs and meat” や “meat from birds such as chickens and ducks” と定義されております。
今回はpoultry farmとなっており、「養鶏場」となるかと思われます。
