Shoe watch, shoe watch. I used to make a cross with my arms as I pretended to be the superhero, Ultraman. “From the land of light, he comes for justice … our Ultraman!” goes the retro-sounding melody.
The streets around Soshigaya Okura Station on the Odakyu Line are filled with Ultraman motifs. There are street lamps designed to look like Ultraman’s eyes, and the lamp poles have timer-looking gadgets on them (you know, that timer on Ultraman’s chest that tells him that it’s time to leave for outer space) which you can peep inside and see more of Ultraman.

今回取り上げる表現は、“eclectic”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈考え方・人などが〉１つに偏らず幅広い、折衷的な；〈集団・収集物などが〉種々の出所からよりすぐった」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“including a mixture of many different things or people, especially so that you can use the best of all of them”と定義されていました。
今回の表現は、ギリシャ語の“eklektikós”「選択する」を語源とする表現です(「goo辞書」)。何か好きなものを尋ねられた際などに、“I’m eclectic.”と表現すると、「いろいろあるよ」と表現することができます。(Blue Sky)
