リオデジャネイロオリンピック・競泳男子４００メートル個人メドレー決勝で、萩野公介選手が金メダル、瀬戸大也選手が銅メダルをそれぞれ獲得しました。
OLYMPICS/ Hagino wins Japan's 1st swimming gold in 400 meters
RIO DE JANEIRO--Kosuke Hagino became the first Japanese to capture a gold medal at the Rio Summer Olympics, winning the 400-meter individual medley race on Aug. 6, the first day of the swimming competition at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
Hagino set a Japanese record of 4 minutes, 6.05 seconds to stand at the top of the podium. He improved on the bronze he won at the London Games four years ago.
Compatriot Daiya Seto took the bronze with a time of 4 minutes, 9.71 seconds. American Chase Kalisz won the silver.
The auspicious start by Japanese swimmers was in sharp contrast to four years ago when they failed to win gold, although they did collect 11 medals, second only to the United States.

今回取り上げる表現は、“auspicious”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(機械・始まりなどが)幸先の良い、吉兆の、将来の明るい；幸運な」とありました。かたい表現であるということも載っていました。
LDOCEでは、“showing that something is likely to be successful”と定義されていました。
今回の記事でもそうですが、“auspicious start”というフレーズで用いられることがよくあるようです。このフレーズには、「幸先のよいスタート」という日本語があてはまるのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
