Major renovations under way at Meiji Jingu for centennial

A torii gate at Meiji Jingu shrine has been replaced as part of massive renovations under way to give the shrine a new face by 2020, the 100th anniversary of when its deities were enshrined.

The Minami-Tamagaki Torii gate, known as the third torii, was rebuilt for the first time since its establishment, and a ceremony marking the completion of the work was held on Oct. 26 at the shrine in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo.

The torii is about 7.45 meters tall, the fourth biggest among the eight torii at the shrine. Japanese cypress from Nagano and Aichi prefectures was used for the new gate.
