Boy killed after wooden jungle gym catches fire at art exhibition
A wooden jungle gym filled with wood shavings burst into flames at an art show in Tokyo on Nov. 6, killing a 5-year-old boy playing inside the exhibit, police and other sources said.
The 44-year-old father of Kento Saeki, a kindergarten pupil from Tokyo’s Minato Ward, and a man in his 40s suffered burns trying to rescue the boy from the 2-meter-high jungle gym.
The fire at the venue of the Tokyo Design Week event at Jingu Gaien park area outside Meiji Shrine in Shinjuku Ward was extinguished 30 minutes later, the sources said.
According to the sources, a local fire station received a call around 5:15 p.m. saying, “A wooden artwork is burning.”
Police have opened an investigation on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death and injuries.
They suspect the shavings were ignited by heat generated by lighting that was placed inside the jungle gym for an illumination effect.
The jungle gym was created by a group of students from the Nippon Institute of Technology (NIT).

“ignite”の第２義に「〈人・心など〉を刺激する、興奮させる」、第３義には「〈口論・暴動など〉を引き起こす、あおる」があります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。これらの意味で用いられることも多く、“ignite a civil war”「内戦に火をつける」というように用いられます。
