Public facility symbols to get tourist-friendly makeovers

Confusing public information symbols, which often leave foreign tourists scratching their heads, have prompted the government to revamp the pictograms ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The economy ministry announced July 7 at a Japanese Industrial Standards revision committee meeting that 70 of about 140 pictograms used at public facilities will be revised from next summer to meet the standards set by the International Organization for Standardization.

The remaining 70 or so symbols will continue to be used because there are no international standards that correspond to them.

One confusing pictogram that will be revamped is the symbol for onsen, represented by three wavy lines rising from an oval. Foreigners often mistake the symbol to mean that warm food is available, so three icons representing human bathers will be added to prevent confusion.

The ministry will also add about 40 new symbols, including those that indicate prayer rooms for Muslims, ATMs that accept overseas cash cards and Wi-Fi hotspots.

今回取り上げる表現は、“scratch one’s head”です。そのまま解釈しようとすると、「頭を掻く」となりますが、文脈的にあてはまりません。「英辞郎 on the WEB」で調べたところ、「〔不満・困惑のしぐさとして〕頭をかく」とありました。

Macmillan Dictionary.comでは、“to not understand something, or to not know how to deal with it”と定義されていました。

日本語で「頭を掻く」というと「失敗を自ら恥じたり照れたりするさま」(『広辞苑』)という意味ですが、英語であると困っていたり、不満であったりすることを意味します。同じ動作を表す表現ですが、日本語と英語では意味に差異があるようです。
