先日, 家庭向け「クッキングソルト」と「食卓塩」の価格が, 24年ぶりに引き上げられるとの発表がありました。本日, このニュースに因み, “salt” を使った “above [below] the salt” という表現を取り上げます。
『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)によると, “above [below] the salt” で「《史》上座 [下座] に<すわる>」という意味を表します。これは昔, 食卓で塩入れの上手は上席であったことに由来するようです。また, 「貴族 [下層階級] に属して」という意味も記されています。
