Post offices across Japan have officially started accepting New Year's cards for 2016, as online greetings continue to gain ground.

The Tokyo central post office held a ceremony on Tuesday featuring the pop group Arashi to try and attract more attention to the traditional way of sending greetings.

今回取り上げるのは、“gain ground”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“to make steady progress and become more popular, more successful etc"と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認すると、「進歩する、成功する」や「(支持・人気・力など)を得る、普及する」といった意味が見つかりました。また、この表現には「敵を後退させる」という意味もあり、「軍隊が領土を獲得し、拡大させていく」というところから、上記の意味にもなったのではないかと考えられます。(ninetails)
