A Ground Self-Defense Force unit assigned to peacekeeping operations in South Sudan attends a send-off ceremony at the GSDF garrison in Aomori on Saturday. The GSDF’s engineering unit, comprising about 350 members, was assigned new duties including conducting rescue missions to help people under attack — permissible after the enforcement of security-related laws. They will be dispatched to South Sudan from Sunday.
