『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版(大修館書店)』によると、「くだらない長話、手のこんだ手続き」とあり、『Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary』にも“a long and complicated process that is annoying and seems unnecessary”、“a long and complicated story”と載っていました。つまりこの“rigmarole” には、「長ったらしい、面倒だ、複雑だ、くだらない」といったようなニュアンスが含まれているのではないかと思います。
記事の中の“rigmarole”は「手続き」の意味かと思いますが、上のことを踏まえると、「面倒で長々とした手続き」というような感じでしょうか。
ちなみに、『Online Eymology Dictionary』で語源を調べてみると、長い名簿やカタログを表す“ragman role”からきているなどと、諸説あるようで、面白いと感じました。(Three)
