tomfoolery 復習

また１つ、印象に残ったワードを紹介します。

tomfoolery /tɒmˈfuːl(ə)ri/ です。

これは、カルガリー大学にD2Lというcourse powerのような機能を持つページがあるのですが、Shakespeare 311（授業名）の教授からの連絡事項が来た際に見つけた単語でした。その文面では、 “During class, whenever appropriate, you post comments, questions, useful resources, gifs, links, and/or general ‘tomfoolery’ to the #backchannel in Slack.” とあり、foolから「軽い冗談」と解釈したのですが確信は無かったので調べることにしました。

Collins English Dictionaryを引くと、“Tomfoolery is playful behaviour, usually of a rather silly, noisy, or rough kind.” と定義されています。

手持ちの辞書『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）を使って調べると、「（やや古風）おふざけ、いたずら」と記述されていました。

また、由来を調べたところ、興味深い説が載っており “…It is sometimes claimed that the original Tom Fool was Thomas Skelton. He was a jester, a fool, for the Pennington family at Muncaster Castle in Cumbria… – he is said to be the model for the jester in Shakespeare’s King Lear of 1606. He starts appearing in the historical record early 1300s in the Latinate form Thomas fatuus. … The second word means stupid or foolish in Latin…” と記載がありました。(http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-tom2.html)

以上のことから、tomfooleryは「馬鹿げた振る舞い、話、くだらない冗談」と訳されることが分かります。語源について触れると、時を遡り1606年、シェイクスピア四大悲劇の一作『リヤ王』におけるjesterのモデルと言われたThomas Skelton に由来するそうです。さらに、ラテン語での表記は「愚かな、思慮分別のない」を指す fatuus ということで、言語的背景及び文学的観点から捉えられた表現の１つであることが理解できました。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）

P.S: 個人的な印象にはなりますが、Shakespeare作に精通する教授であるからこその、遊び心も踏まえた言い回しであったのではないかと思いました。
