The American Southwest and Central Plains could be on course for super-droughts the like of which they have not witnessed in over a 1,000 years.

Places like California are already facing very dry conditions, but these are quite gentle compared with some periods in the 12th and 13th Centuries.

Scientists have now compared these earlier droughts with climate simulations for the coming decades.

気になった表現は “on course for”です。辞書で確認してみたところ、「（この調子なら）〜が達成しそうである、見込まれる」という意味がありました。“course”には名詞で「（物が進む）道（筋）」とあります。辞書と以前UG先生が取り上げられていた記事を参考にさせていただきながら考えると、 “on course for” は「筋道を立てて物事を進めた結果に予想される」といった意味合いで使われるのでしょう。（『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』大修館）
