Valentine’s Day means heavy bouquet traffic.
It is the nature of flowers to die, and pretty quickly, so why are they given as a symbol of love?
We posed this question to the artist Rebecca Louise Law.
Two weeks ago, Ms. Law hung some 16,000 fresh flowers in the lobby of the Viacom building in Times Square — ranunculuses, roses, peonies, hydrangeas, delphiniums, thistles.
The answer, she said, was simple: Part of the joy of receiving flowers is watching them change.
“This installation is there till March for a reason,” she said. “I want people to see flowers beyond fresh.
“It’s about enjoying them fresh, and then seeing what they can become.”
An experience not so different, perhaps, from love.
