Fans vote for Mayu Watanabe as new leader of AKB48
Mayu Watanabe was selected the most popular member of all-girl group AKB48 at the annual AKB48 popularity poll at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday night.
Watanabe, 20, got 159,854 votes. In second spot was last year’s winner Rina Sashihara with 141,954 votes.
More than 70,000 fans gathered for the concert and to hear the results of the ballot that decides which member will lead the band for the next year amid tight security after two members were attacked by a man wielding a saw.
Organizers said 300 members of the group were running for the top spot in one of the world’s highest grossing acts.
grossingは当然，grossからきた形容詞です。「売り上げが最も多い，習金力の高い」という意味ですね。ちなみに「センター」はここではthe top spotとなっていました。（Ume）
