Humiliated David Cameron QUITS as UK reels from vote for Brexit in EU referendum

David Cameron has announced he is quitting as Prime Minister in an extraordinary statement just hours after Britain voted for Brexit .

The Tory leader delivered today's historic announcement on the steps of Downing Street with his wife Samantha after his campaign to keep Britain in the EU failed, with Tory shires and Labour heartlands propelling Brexit to a shock 52-48 victory.

Late last night 86 Brexit-backing Tory MPs promised to stand by him regardless of the result - but as millions of Leave votes tumbled in so too came calls for him to go.

In an emotional statement on his commitment to social reform including gay marriage, he said he would stay on for three months for stability and give way to a new leader before October's Conservative Party Conference.

But he said he would not activate Article 50, the clause which triggers an irreversible two-year process to leave the European Union - and which he previously said should happen "straight away".

(Akim)
