The Olympic cauldron
(UG)
1964 Olympic cauldron to be preserved at new stadium
The Olympic cauldron, which was used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, will be preserved at the new national stadium to be built for the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, together with a plate bearing the names of gold medalists at the Games, the sports ministry has said.
The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry has decided to do so in response to growing calls for preserving the cauldron as a heritage of the 1964 Games.
During the construction of the new stadium in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, the ministry may lend the cauldron to places connected with the 1964 Games, it said.
