smoke-free 復習

Tokyo will host the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 for the second time, 56 years after the quadrennial sports festival exalting human diversity was first held in the Japanese capital. The forthcoming Games will be completely different from the previous undertaking in that strong interest is now being shown in the Paralympics, whereas the public did not necessarily pay much attention to the event for athletes with disabilities in 1964.

The International Olympic Committee adopted a smoke-free policy for Olympic Games in 1988, and signed an agreement with the World Health Organization in 2010 to promote “tobacco-free Olympic Games.” It has therefore become imperative for countries hosting Olympic and Paralympic Games to prepare smoke-free indoor spaces for athletes and spectators.

　気になったのはsmoke-free / smˈəʊk fríː/です。文脈から「吸ってはいけない」という意味なのは分かりましたが、単語だけで見たときはまるで「吸い放題」であるような印象を受けるので調べてみました。やはり、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「煙のない;禁煙の」とありました。調べてみると、名詞に-freeつくことによって「…がない,無料の」という意味の形容詞になることがわかりました。日本でも定着しているかと思いますが、tax-freeなどもsmoke-freeと同じ考え方なのだと思います。

　オリンピック委員会が禁煙を掲げていることを初めて知りました。受動喫煙防止法にはこのことも関係しているようです。(rain)
