Pc Fiona Bone, 32, and Pc Nicola Hughes, 23, were attending a false report of a burglary on an estate in Hattersley, Tameside, Greater Manchester, when they were attacked with a gun and a grenade shortly before 11am.
Greater Manchester Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said they had been lured to their deaths after one of Britain's most wanted men, Dale Cregan, or someone he knew, reported the burglary.
in cold bloodは「冷酷に、平然として」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)です。形容詞のcold-bloodedと同じ意味を持つ表現ですね。LDOCEによると"in a cruel and deliberate way"と定義されています。ここからin cold bloodには上記の意味に加えて、特に殺人事件などの文脈の場合は「用心深い、計画的な」という意味があることが分かります。
