run in the election
自民党の谷垣禎一総裁が臨時の記者会見を開き、総裁選への立候補を断念することを明らかにしました。
run in the electionとrun for electionの違いは、昔、某予備校で教えていたときに質問された記憶があります。
どちらとも「出馬する、立候補する」あたりの意味でOKですが、（この場合のrunの意味合いは辞書などで確認を！）、in となるかforとなるかはelection次第です。
はっきりと特定の選挙のことを共有されているのであればtheが付いて、run in the electionとなります。そしてこの場合は自民党の総裁選です。
他方、electionがschool（授業）のごとく、特定の選挙戦のことを言っていなくて、抽象名詞的に扱われる場合にはrun for electionとなります。forは方向を表していることからもこれは分かると思います。
ところで谷垣氏（なぜかさだまさしと顔の形がダブります）は昨日までは地元の有権者に全力であたると言っていたはずで、それが今日になってこのどんでん返し。断腸の思いだったことでしょう。（UG）

Tanigaki Won't Run In LDP Presidential Election
TOKYO--Japan Liberal Democratic Party chief Sadakazu Tanigaki said Monday that he won't run in the party's presidential election scheduled for later this month.
Mr. Tanigaki said at a press conference that he had intended to run, but determined that there were too many candidates in the race.
LDP Secretary-General Nobuteru Ishihara, who served under Mr. Tanigaki in the party's number two post, is widely expected to announce his candidacy later today.
The two held talks over the past several days in a bid to avoid competing candidacies.
"It's not good for two people in the present party leadership to run in the same race," Mr. Tanigaki said.
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has also expressed the possibility of running in the election.
The LDP's presidential elections are scheduled for Sept. 26.
