stage a comeback

(GP)

Abe elected as LDP chief, aiming to stage comeback as Japan's PM
TOKYO, Sept. 26, Kyodo

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was elected Wednesday as head of the Liberal Democratic Party after a neck-and-neck contest with former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, positioning him to stage a comeback as Japan's top political leader.

Abe and Ishiba faced each other in a runoff in which only LDP legislators voted, as none of the five contenders won a majority in the first round of voting in the party presidential election.

Ishiba secured the strongest support among rank-and-file party members, whose votes are thought to reflect public opinion, but Abe garnered more backing from lawmakers. In the initial ballot, Ishiba won the most votes among the 498 cast -- 198 by Diet members and 300 by local party branches.
