あけましておめでとうございます。昨日は箱根駅伝・往路，そして本日（1月3日）は復路ですね。 本日付のDYから往路について述べられている Upstaged Kashiwabara helps Toyo pass Waseda in final stage, move into position for 3-peatを取り上げます。
Waseda was on center stage all day--at least until the final act.
Ryuji Kashiwabara wasn't able to become the first runner to set stage records over three consecutive years in the Tokyo-Hakone Ekiden, but Toyo University's mountain climber boosted his squad into position to win for the third straight time.
The junior chased down Waseda University, which had led almost from the opening step, in Sunday's fifth and final stage to move Toyo to the front of the two-day race at the halfway point in a course-record 5 hours 29 minutes 50 seconds.
今回ご紹介するのはchase downです。「追いかける」という意味のchaseはdownが付いた今回の場合はどのような意味でしょうか。辞書を引いて確認しました。

記事では往路5区で，2位につけていた東洋大学の柏原選手が早稲田大学の猪俣選手を抜いて往路有優勝を勝ち取ったことが述べられています。このchase downを使い前方ランナーをようやく捜し当て，追い抜いていこうという様子が描写されているのが読み取れます。”chase”は原義が「捕える」ですので（同上），原義だけ取ってみても東洋大学はまさしく早稲田を捕えていましたね。
日本正月名物・箱根駅伝。往路でのタイム差があまりない大学も多くあり，選手がchase downをする場面を目にすることがたくさんあるでしょう。今年の優勝チーム，そして来年の箱根のためのシード権を獲得するのはどこでしょうか。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
