　愛媛県松山市で、41歳の男が車で暴走し、6つの事故を引き起こしました。

MATSUYAMA, Ehime Prefecture--A 41-year-old "stressed-out" man with his mother in the back seat led police on a high-speed car chase through the city here on Nov. 13, causing six accidents in the hour-long pursuit.

Ehime prefectural police announced that it arrested Ryohei Zaima, a company employee in Imabari, on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Law.

Police said Zaima admitted to the offenses and reportedly told them, “Various stresses led me to try to self-destruct and to drive recklessly.”

　気になった語は"self-destruct"です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「（機械・爆弾などが）事故破壊する、自滅する」と載っていました。ハイフンで繋がれた語が動詞として使われるのは珍しいのではないかと思います。現に"self-"が付く語は辞書に見開き1ページ分載っていますが、動詞として使われているのはその1語だけでした。「...を自爆させる」を意味する"destruct"の原義は、「下に(de) 建てる(struct)」です。(Large Lake)
