アメリカのトランプ大統領はG7サミットでの首脳宣言を承認しないとし、その理由にカナダのトルドー首相が不誠実な態度を取ったからだと発言しました。

tug-of-war に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「綱引き、主導権争い、覇権が絡む戦い」といった意味があります。次に『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみてみると “a type of sport in which two teams show their strength by pulling against each other at the opposite ends of a rope, and each team tries to pull the other over aline on the ground” とあり、二者による一つの物事を巡る力の見せつけ合いを表していると窺えます。
tug は辞書によれば「(力を込めて急に) 引っ張る、ぐいっと引く」といった意味を伴うため tug-of-war で「引くことに纏わる戦い」と直訳でき「綱引き」を表したり、比喩表現で両者が一つの物事を巡り己の力を出し合う様を「主導権争い」と訳したりすると推察できます。また以前のブログで先輩が指摘している通り、離婚した夫婦同士が子供に対する愛情の大きさを表現しどちらも譲らないといった様から、「(離婚した夫婦による)子供の親権争い」を指す “tug of love” というフレーズもあります。
一度は、アメリカのみに有利な点の多い通商政策の採択が他国の反対意見を解消できないままに首脳宣言に踏み切るかに見えましたが、結果は結束に向かっていた各国の取り組みが水の泡になってしまいました。(Happidra)

今回はskirmish / skˈɚːmɪʃ / を紹介します。意味の予測がうまくできなかったので調べてみました。まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “An episode of irregular unpremeditated fighting especially between small or outlying parts of armies or fleets.” と定義されていました。
つまり「ちょっとした口論」とした意味でしょうか。確認するため、『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べました。すると「[…間の/…との/…の件での]（戦争での無計画な）小競り合い, 小戦闘」とありました。語源を調べてみると、フランス語escaramoucheから由来しています。また中期英語でskirmisshen「武器を振り回す」となり、これが語源になっています。
ここでは「小競り合い、ちょっとしたケンカ」といった意味になるかと思います。(amphibian)

hinge on /híndʒ/ を取り上げます。hingeだけでは扉などのちょうつがいという意味がありますが、動詞として用いられた場合、どのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると、自動詞で「…次第である、…次第で決まる（depend）」とありました。後ろにonやuponが共起して用いられるようです。
LDOCEには “hinge on/upon something” の形で “if a result hinges on something, it depends on it completely” と定義されています。
また、hingeはかなめ、要点などの意味もあり、重要な部分がどうなるかによって方向性が決まるというところから「〜次第」と言いたいときに使われるようになったのではないかと思いました。（aqua）

ASAHI WEEKLY (p.14) にあった警察犬 ロッキーの冒険からです。
I treated Angie to a movie at the Varsity Theater on University Avenue and a picnic on Waikiki Beach to celebrate her commendation medal. The HPD bureaucracy moves at a glacial pace, and it was the first week in July before award finally came through.
私が取り上げるのは at a glacial pace です。読む段階ではなんと訳したら良いかわかりませんでしたが、調べてみると面白い使い方だと思い、取り上げました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「氷の、氷河時代の/進行ののろい、遅々とした」という意味でした。
「氷のペース」というのが直訳ですが、そこから転じて「ゆっくりと」というような副詞として利用されているとわかりました。昔ポケットモンスターをやっていた時、グレイシアというポケモンがいたことを思い出しました。(Marathonman)

「英・語・源」で調べてみるとラテン語のeo/ire(=go)に由来していることが分かりました。

in a foul moodを取り上げます。foulが含まれている表現なので、良い意味でないことは分かります。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「機嫌が悪く」 とありました。in a foul temperでも同じような意味になるそうです。また、LDOCEでは“in a very bad temper and likely to get angry”と定義されています。今回のニュースを日本語でも読んだのですが、動機について「むしゃくしゃしてやった」という言葉がありました。この言葉を訳したのが記事にある“I was in a foul mood.”だと思います。(Blue Sky)
You are grounded 復習
Netflix内の数ある映画やドラマ作品の中でも人気を誇っている「13 Reasons Why」（American narrative drama）を鑑賞したのですが、気になったのはセリフの１つに出てきたyou are groundedでした。このフレーズは、登場人物の1人が親と交わした約束を破ってしまった結果叱りを受けるというシーンの中で使用されたので、親から子供への罰の一種を示したものであると推測しました。以下で意味等確認していきたいと思います。
『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）を引くと、動詞のgroundには様々な意義があり、第一義には「（ground A on B）A（理論など）の根拠をB（典拠など）に置く」、第三義では「（船を）座礁させる、（飛行機を）飛行停止にさせる」となっています。着目した部分は、例文として載っていた “My dad has grounded me for a week.” のように、groundが「（罰として）（子供）を家の外に出さない、外出禁止にする」という意味を含むことです。
またCambridge Dictionaryで定義を調べると、“a child or young person who is grounded is not allowed to go out as a punishment” とあり、“be grounded” 受け身の形を用いて「外出禁止状態にある」ことを指します。
ちなみに、日本では子供が家庭のルールを破った際、実際に家から締め出したりすることが多いと言われている一方で、アメリカ式の罰の与え方としては部屋に閉じ込めて外出禁止にすることも少なくないようです。今回私が観たのは米青春ドラマ
なので、you are groundedのセリフは後者の意味合いが込められていたと思われます。
個人的には、groundが名詞及び動詞の形においても多義語であることを今一度確認する良い機会となりました。カナダへ来てからもTVや映画を観る度に知らない単語や表現は山ほど出てきますが、その１つ１つを自分の頭に落とし込めるよう言外の意を汲み取ることも重要だと改めて感じます。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）

先日ホストマザーの甥の卒業式に出席してきました。式は無事に終わったのですが、その後夕食に出かけようとした際に、彼の父親が車のカギを無くしてしまったということがわかりました。彼はこのことを父親からの電話で知らされていました。その電話の中からの表現を紹介します。
lost and found です。この表現を彼は電話で何度も繰り返していました。まだ見つかっていないという話であったのにも関わらず、なぜfoundという単語が使われているのか気になり、調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）によると「｟米｠[the〜] 遺失物取扱所、忘れ物センター （｟英｠lost property）
Collins COUBULD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th) には“Lost and found is the place where lost property is kept” “Lost and found things are things which someone else has found”と定義されています。
何気ない日常会話からでも学べるものがたくさんあるということを改めて実感しました。こっちにいる間に少しでも多くのことを吸収して帰りたいと思います。[ko-chi @ Calgary]

なぜ西武新宿線はメインの新宿駅からあんなに離れているのでしょうか。JNの記事からです。

今日は protrude /proʊtrúːd/ をとりあげます。うまく読み進めることができなかったのでとりあげました。予想の段階では、かみ合わないというような意味だと考えました。しかし調べてみると、「（〜から）突き出る（from）」とありました。つまり、西武新宿線は新宿駅の２階に接続される予定だったが、プラットホームが6両しか合わずはみ出てしまうので取りやめになったというひとつの説があったということです。メインの新宿駅から西武新宿線に向かう途中にとてもおいしいカレーがある喫茶店「Cafe HAITI」があります。（雑誌 POPEYEで紹介されていました）（Marathonman）
