アメリカのトランプ大統領はG7サミットでの首脳宣言を承認しないとし、その理由にカナダのトルドー首相が不誠実な態度を取ったからだと発言しました。
President Emmanuel Macron of France said the trade debates at the summit were “sometimes quite heated.” Asked who won the tug-of-war with Trump, Mr. Macron said: “There is no winner, there are only losers when you take that strategy.”
Theresa May, the British prime minister, blasted Mr. Trump’s tariffs, saying that she had registered “our deep disappointment at the unjustified decision” and that the loss of trade through tariffs would “ultimately make everyone poorer.”

tug-of-war に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「綱引き、主導権争い、覇権が絡む戦い」といった意味があります。次に『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみてみると “a type of sport in which two teams show their strength by pulling against each other at the opposite ends of a rope, and each team tries to pull the other over aline on the ground” とあり、二者による一つの物事を巡る力の見せつけ合いを表していると窺えます。
tug は辞書によれば「(力を込めて急に) 引っ張る、ぐいっと引く」といった意味を伴うため tug-of-war で「引くことに纏わる戦い」と直訳でき「綱引き」を表したり、比喩表現で両者が一つの物事を巡り己の力を出し合う様を「主導権争い」と訳したりすると推察できます。また以前のブログで先輩が指摘している通り、離婚した夫婦同士が子供に対する愛情の大きさを表現しどちらも譲らないといった様から、「(離婚した夫婦による)子供の親権争い」を指す “tug of love” というフレーズもあります。
一度は、アメリカのみに有利な点の多い通商政策の採択が他国の反対意見を解消できないままに首脳宣言に踏み切るかに見えましたが、結果は結束に向かっていた各国の取り組みが水の泡になってしまいました。(Happidra)
