梅雨の時期は雨の日が多く蒸し暑いため、カビが繁殖しやすくなっています。国際交流会館でも清掃員の方達が、シャワー室のカビがなかなか落ちないと頭を抱えています。シャワー室の個室の一つに、「カビ取り中のため使用禁止」という張り紙がしてありました。留学生に、カビって何？と聞かれたとき、咄嗟に英語が出てこなかったので調べてみました。
まず、英辞郎on the WEBで調べてみたところ、"mold"や"fungus"などがありました（cf. musty）。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で引き直してみると、"mold"は「（緑、灰、黒色の）かび」や「糸状菌」とあり、動詞でも「かびが生える」という意味で使われます。また、"fungus"は「菌類（カビ、キノコなど）」や「（菌類のように）にわかに発生する（いやな）もの」、「ポリープ、金状腫、真菌、菌、かび」とありました。
LDOCEでは、"a hollow container that you pour a liquid or soft substance into, so that when it becomes solid, it takes the shape of the container"や"a simple type of plant that has no leaves or flowers and that grows on plants or other surfaces. mushroom and mould are both fungi."と定義されています。(Akim)

同上英和辞典でも“in the thick of the fighting”、Merriam-Websterでは“in the thick of the battle”という例文があるように「戦いの真っ只中」にある時に用いられるようです。
今回は自衛隊が豪雨での行方不明者の捜索や救助にあたっていた時を指しています。「何の政務か」「救援活動の指揮に問題はないのか」などの声を受けて稲田氏は、民間との防衛政策に関する勉強会に参加していた事、秘書官から常に連絡を受けていたことを述べ、問題はないとしていますが批判が相次いでいます。(flying bird)
