“the thick of the action”を取りあげます。
“thick”というと形容詞の「厚い」やスープの「濃い」などが思い浮かびますが、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）の名詞の項目に「（活動などの）最中、たけなわ、最も激しい場所」とありました。
同上英和辞典でも“in the thick of the fighting”、Merriam-Websterでは“in the thick of the battle”という例文があるように「戦いの真っ只中」にある時に用いられるようです。
今回は自衛隊が豪雨での行方不明者の捜索や救助にあたっていた時を指しています。「何の政務か」「救援活動の指揮に問題はないのか」などの声を受けて稲田氏は、民間との防衛政策に関する勉強会に参加していた事、秘書官から常に連絡を受けていたことを述べ、問題はないとしていますが批判が相次いでいます。(flying bird)
