今回取り上げる表現は、“net”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、よく知られている“net”「網」とは綴りが同じで違うものが載っていました。その“net”は動詞で、「〈企業・人などが〉…の純益を上げる[得る]；〈人が〉(税引き後)…の所得を得る」という意味でした。
LDOCEでは、“informal to earn a particular amount of money as a profit after tax has been paid”と定義されています。
今回の“net”はフランス語で「きれいな」という意味の表現からきているそうです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。動詞的用法よりも前に形容詞的用法が載っており、「正味の、中身だけの、掛け値のない〈価格・収益・重量など〉(↔gross)」とありました。今回の記事は漁業関係の記事なので、“net”という表現が好んで用いられているのだと思われます。(Blue Sky)

今回取り上げる単語は、podです。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “a small herd or school of marine animals, especially whales”とのことでした。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「（クジラ・イルカなどの）群れ」と載っておりました。
以上からpodは海に住む哺乳類の群れを指すことが分かりました。今回の記事では脱走したイルカを指しています。

On 29 December, the hashtag #mediablackout reached the top of Twitter's trends list in the UK. The story that the media were allegedly blacking out was the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Rumours swirled of a conspiracy to keep the public in the dark.
As with most rumours, hoaxes and fake news items, this one had an initial veneer of believability - if you are inclined towards conspiracy theories.
The Queen had recently been ill, causing her to miss Christmas Day services. And of course there had been a particularly high number of notable and celebrity deaths in 2016.

"veneer"を『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で調べてみると、「(家具などの表面に張る)化粧板、(合板用の)薄板、ベニア」という意味のほかに、「見せかけ、うわべの飾り」という意味があることが分かりました。
"veneer of honesty"で「うわべだけの誠実」とありました。
したがって、"veneer of believability"は「うわべだけの信頼」となるかと思います。

今回取り上げるのは “bid up” です。bidには「〜の値をつける」という意味がありますが、upが後ろにくるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると、他動詞で「（値）をせり上げる」とありました。LDOCEでは “bid something up” で “if people bid up a price, they cause it to increase because of the competition between them in bidding” と定義されております。
記事に戻りますと、 “The price rose because everybody bid up” とあり、競争相手が多かったことで、競りの価格がどんどん上がっていったことが理由としてあげられています。

“idyll”/ɪdəla/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「田園風景(生活)」とありました。LDOCEでは“place or experience in which everything is peaceful and everyone is perfectly happy”と定義されています。ギリシャ語 のeidỳllion から由来しており、短い田園詩のeíd(os)と、指小接尾辞の-yllion が組み合わっているようです。指小辞は小さい、親愛の情、雰囲気の軽さ、などの意味を付け加えるために名詞の後に付け加えて用いることから、語源から明らかですが、田園風景や生活といったものに愛着や親近感が湧くものという意味合いがあるとわかりました。(lua)

記事の中で気になった単語は"trepidation"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）を調べると「恐怖, おののき; ろうばい」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"A feeling of fear or anxiety about something that may happen"と定義されております。氷塊の原因は地球温暖化にあると専門家は主張しております。(Ume)
Huge Antarctic iceberg poised to break away
A long-running rift in the Larson C ice shelf grew suddenly in December and now just 20km of ice is keeping the 5,000 sq km piece from floating away.
Larsen C is the most northern major ice shelf in Antarctica.
Researchers based in Swansea say the loss of a piece a quarter of the size of Wales will leave the whole shelf vulnerable to future break-up.
Larsen C is about 350m thick and floats on the seas at the edge of West Antarctica, holding back the flow of glaciers that feed into it.
Researchers have been tracking the rift in Larsen C for many years, watching it with some trepidation after the collapse of Larsen A ice shelf in 1995 and the sudden break-up of the Larsen B shelf in 2002.

鳥取出身の武信は，若き日に英語へと目覚め，愛知英語学校から札幌農学校に第4期生として明治13（1880）年に入学しました。卒業後は長野・飯田の中学校での勤務を経て，明治20（1887）年にジャパン・メール社に入社し，それがThe Japan timesの創刊となったことはよく知られています。武信はその後，早大や東京高等などの教壇に立ちながら，和英辞典など英語教育史に残る数々の書物の出版に携わり，昭和5年（1930）に亡くなりました。
達意の英文の書き手であった武信がその英語力の素地としたのがGoldsmithの“The Vicar of Wakefield”（小生も研究社の英米文学叢書（「赤本」）で読破しました！）の徹底暗唱だったと，高校教員時代の恩師から教わりました。個人的にはそのあたりのことを森先生にお聞きしたいなあと思っています。
