At a ceremony in Tokyo in early December, the Shanghai Tower elevators and the company that made them, Mitsubishi Electric, were officially awarded the title by Guinness World Records. Yet many passengers may not even experience the top speed. To do so, you have to travel in a souped-up elevator car with a Mitsubishi technician who can flick a switch, making the speedometer on the screen turn red: 20.5 meters per second (45.8 mph).

今回取り上げる表現は，“souped-up”です。“soup”というと「スープ」がぱっと思い浮かべます。しかし，このような形になるとどうでしょうか。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を調べてみると，「〈車・エンジンなどが〉パワーアップした」と記載されていました。さらにMerriam-Websterを引いてみると，“enhanced or increased in appeal, power, performance, or intensity”と定義されています。
動詞の用法になると，“soup up”「〈エンジンなど〉の馬力をあげる」や「を改良する」，「を強化する」，「をもっと面白くする」などの意味になります。
なぜこのような意味になったのか調べてみると，Merriam-Websterに“soup (drug injected into a racehorse to improve its performance)”とありました。“soup”には，「興奮剤」や「（飛行機などの）強化燃料」という意味があり，ここから転じてきているようです。(Nao)
