イルカを囲んでいた網が何者かによって切られ、脱走してしまいました。

Dolphins escape from Taiji facility in Japan

The bottlenose dolphins were estimated to be between three to five years old. They were being trained in the seaside pens having been held there for more than six months.

The park would not tell the BBC whether they were wild or captive-bred.

The escaped pod were spotted swimming outside their pool at the facility, where visitors can interact and swim with the animals, on Wednesday.

今回取り上げる単語は、podです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “a small herd or school of marine animals, especially whales”とのことでした。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「（クジラ・イルカなどの）群れ」と載っておりました。

以上からpodは海に住む哺乳類の群れを指すことが分かりました。今回の記事では脱走したイルカを指しています。

すでにご存じの方もいると思いますが、podには他の意味があります。「（エンドウ豆などの）さや；さや状のもの」や「ポッド（翼下にある燃料・荷物などの格納部分）」、「（バッタなどの）卵塊；繭」などです。合わせて覚えようと思います。（Gomez）
