Bluefin tuna nets 74 million yen at Tsukiji’s New Year auction

A 212-kilogram bluefin tuna sold for 74.2 million yen ($628,920) on Jan. 5, the second-highest price on record for the first auction of the year at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo.

Kiyomura Corp., operator of a popular sushi restaurant chain and holder of the record 155-million-yen price paid in 2013, again placed the winning bid in the early morning auction.

“It was a bit expensive,” said Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura, which has won the New Year’s auction for six consecutive years. “Had there been no one to bid against, the price would have been around 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen per kilogram. The price rose because everybody bid up.”

今回取り上げるのは “bid up” です。bidには「〜の値をつける」という意味がありますが、upが後ろにくるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、他動詞で「（値）をせり上げる」とありました。LDOCEでは “bid something up” で “if people bid up a price, they cause it to increase because of the competition between them in bidding” と定義されております。

記事に戻りますと、 “The price rose because everybody bid up” とあり、競争相手が多かったことで、競りの価格がどんどん上がっていったことが理由としてあげられています。
