「名探偵ポワロ」より表現を拾います。ポワロとヘイスティングスは，真犯人を突き止めましたが（実はポワロ本人の側には確たる証拠はなく，ポワロが宿泊しているホテルの部屋に呼び込んで，本人を自白させ，それらしい告白状を書かせ，真犯人に仕立て上げてしまいました）24時間の猶予を与え，真犯人を逃がすような素振りを見せていました。そうと見せかけて，裁判所にいた警官に直接報告に行きました。「名探偵ポワロ」シリーズではあまりないケースです。それが終わったポワロとヘイスティングスは，宿舎を後にし，帰り支度を進めていました。すると近くにジャップ警部の姿がありました。何やら，現在開かれている裁判で犯人の「黒」は確定し，喜び，珍しいものを食べている様子でした。今回は，ホテルから出て来て，ジャップ警部を2人が見つけたところからです。
Hastings: Oh, there is Japp! I don’t know what you’re going to tell him.
Poirot: Nothing at all, Hastings. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. He will learn soon enough that his open and shut case has the broken hinges.
注目したのは，his open and shut case has the broken hingesです。『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第5版（学研教育出版）には，第一語義に（くだけた語）で「明白な，極めて簡単な」，第二語義には「（事件が）すぐ解決できる」とありました。LDOCE5にはopen-and-shut caseで“[C usually singular] a legal case or other matter that is easy to prove or decide because the facts are very clear”とありました。hingeは以前から何回も取り上げられておりますが，「[比喩的に]かなめ，要点」（“A central or pivotal point or principle on which everything depends”-- Oxford Dictionaries.com）という意味です。この場合のcaseは，「事件」という意味と，「入れ物」という意味の「ケース」という意味が掛けられております。「簡単な（開け閉め可能な）事件（ケース）の要（蝶番）が壊れるが破綻している（壊れている）」（拙訳，筆者）ということです。吹き替えの方では，「警部の見込み違い」と訳されていました。このopen and shutという語は警部が劇中で最初に使用し，それをポワロが遊びを入れているということになります。同時に，ポワロは比喩表現を巧みに利用していることにもなるのです。（Kawada）

既に知ってる方もおられるかと思いますが、大阪市梅田の交差点で歩道に車が突っ込み運転手を含む２人が死亡するという事故がありました。運転手の死因は大動脈解離による突発性心疾患であるとのことです。

今回取りあげる表現は"arrest"という単語です。始めにこの単語を見た時真っ先に「逮捕」という訳を浮かべましたが「心臓の逮捕」では意味を成しません。では一体どのように用いられてるのでしょうか。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第５版)には「逮捕」以外にも、「止まること、停止」といった意味が記されていました。ここでは後者の用法で用いるのが適切だと考えられます。辞書の用例にも"cardiac arrest"が「心肺停止」と書かれていました。"arrest"の語義が「…に(ar)引き止める(rest)」という事を踏まえるとより覚えやすいと思います。

先週末にワシントンDCを訪れました。ニューヨークの時のように道に迷うことも無く、多くの場所を訪れ、充実した時間を過ごすことが出来たと思います。
交通機関に関して興味深いものを見つけましたので、報告します。
これは押ボタン式の信号機です。ボタンの部分に矢印が書いてあり、渡る方向を指しています。日本と同じように、海外にも押ボタン式の信号機があるのだということが驚きでした。そして、ボタンの上に信号機に関する説明が書いてあるので、とても親切だと思いました。残りの秒数をはっきりとカウントするのも親切だと思いました。日本にも秒数を目盛で示している信号機がありますが、実質何秒残っているのかわかりにくいので、焦って渡るという経験をされた方も多いのではないでしょうか。（Kyoka）

共和党大統領候補で脱落していた，クリス・クリスティニュージャージー州知事が，ドナルド・トランプ氏への支持を表明しました。クリスティ氏は，共和党大統領候補者内で，「大統領に最も近いのはトランプ氏である」と述べました。一方で，クルーズ氏やルビオ氏へは，「大統領になるには準備不足」と否定的です。
記事の中で気になった表現は"on board the bandwagon"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると"bandwagon"で「（政治･事業などで）優勢な意見[活動]，楽隊車」などという意味がありました。例文では"jump [climb, get] on [aboard] the bandwagon"で「〘くだけて･非難して〙＜特に政治家が＞時の趨勢(すうせい)に従って行動する, 時流に乗る」というものがありました（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂））。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"An activity or cause that has suddenly become fashionable or popular"と定義されております。この表現が使われているのには，ネバダ州党員集会も制すなど3連勝しているトランプ氏の勢いをみて，クリスティ氏が支持を表明したという非難が込められているのかもしれません。(Ume)

Chris Christie's endorsement allows Donald Trump help assure voters wary of Mr Trump's brash style that he's an acceptable candidate.
He can also serve as an attack dog, tearing into Marco Rubio the way he did during that fateful debate in New Hampshire.
The Christie endorsement could signal a new phase of Mr Trump's presidential campaign, when prominent politicians begin to make peace with the reality of a Trump nomination.
Mr Christie, and others, may see a benefit to being among the first major figures Trump on board the bandwagon. Already rumours are floating that former candidate Mike Huckabee is on the verge of joining Mr Trump's ranks as well.
This is what happens when a frontrunner draws close to victory. And just because the man approaching the finish line is Donald Trump doesn't make it any less true.
