拾い上げる英語表現は、“tune breath”です。“breath”から「息」に関することだろうと推測しました。そこで、Urban Dictionaryを見てみると、“The smell your breath gets after licking dirty snatch“と記載されていました。ここから、「嫌な臭いの息」と分かります。つまり、今回のシチュエーションでは、ガーフィールドが話した際の息が臭く、ジョンが倒れてしまったということになります。このような表現があるのは、面白いなと感じました。(Nao)

New York Today: Cleaning Up
Good morning on this hot Friday.
On Wednesday, the city council passed a bill requiring all city car washes to have licenses, and to keep up with the city’s environmental and labor laws.
Melissa Mark-Viverito, the council’s speaker, said the main goal was to protect workers, many of whom are undocumented, from wage theft and other substandard work conditions.
In a story about the complicated, soapy world of car washes, Liz Robbins, who covers immigration for The Times, spoke to several owners and workers about how the bill would affect them.
Jake Naughton, a photographer, took pictures of some of those workers during their daily routines — watching the cars roll through the giant washing machine, or wiping down windshields and hubcaps.
He also took some pictures from inside cars as they were getting cleaned, a splattered abstraction of the feeling of a trip through a car wash.
It turns out car washes have provided inspiration for other photographers, too: Mark Lyon did a series of empty car wash bays in New York and New England.
The eerie lighting makes these empty cleansing shells feel otherworldly, despite their rather pedestrian — or vehicular — function.

House Rejects Trade Bills, as Democrats Spurn Obama
House Democrats rebuffed a dramatic personal appeal from President Obama on Friday, torpedoing his ambitious push to expand his trade negotiating power — and, quite likely, his chance to secure a legacy-defining trade accord spanning the Pacific Ocean.
In a remarkable rejection of a president they have resolutely backed, House Democrats voted to kill assistance to workers displaced by global trade, a program their party created and has stood by for four decades. By doing so, they brought down legislation granting the president trade promotion authority — the power to negotiate trade deals that cannot be amended or filibustered by Congress — before it could even come to a final vote.
“We want a better deal for America’s workers,” said Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House minority leader who has guided the president’s agenda for two terms and was personally lobbied by Mr. Obama until the last minute.

“cylinder”と言えば、小中学生の頃に 理科の実験で使った「メスシリンダー」が思い浮かびますが、ここではどのような意味で使われているのでしょうか。
まず気になった“cylinder”を『ジーニアス英和辞典』、『英辞郎on the web』で調べてみると「シリンダー、円筒、円柱」「(エンジン)シリンダー、気筒」「(連弾銃の)弾倉、ボンベ」などと載っており、いずれも円筒状を連想させるものでした。また『Weblio英和辞典』も見てみると、この語はギリシャ語の「転がる」に由来していることがわかりました。
それぞれの辞書に、一緒に表現として“hit on all cylinders”も載っていました。意味は「(エンジンが)フル回転している、全力を挙げる、調子よく動く、血気盛んである」です。主としてJapan Newsに見出し語で使われているように進行形で使われるそうで、“hit”の代わりに“fire”“click”“operate”“function”を使って表現することもあるようです。(Ebina)

ギリシャのデフォルトリスクに反応してEU諸国の株価が下落しました。米国でも0.8%の下げを記録しました。EU諸国の高官が，はじめてデフォルトの可能性に言及したためです。国債のほとんどを自国民が所持する日本と異なり，ギリシャ国債は，海外保有者のほうが多いため，もしデフォルトを起こすと世界中に影響が及ぶと考えられます。
記事の中で気になった単語は"Cash-strapped"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると"strapped"で「経済的に苦しい, 金欠の」などという意味がありました。「資金繰りが厳しい」などと訳せると思います。以前に取り上げられている記事を見ると「（人・組織が）予算、資金不足の」「無一文の」などという訳が紹介されておりました。（Ume）
European shares fall amid Greek default fears
The Athens stock exchange closed nearly 6% lower. Germany's Dax and France's Cac 40 ended more than 1% lower.
Shares also fell in the US, with the Dow Jones index dropping 0.8%.
Cash-strapped Greece is trying to reach a deal that will unlock bailout funds. It is seeking to avoid defaulting on a €1.5bn debt repayment to the IMF.
The payment is due by the end of the month.
