16-year-old boy arrested for throwing 2-liter PET water bottles from condo
Police in Tokyo on Wednesday arrested a 16-year-old boy who threw full 2-liter PET bottles of water from a high-rise apartment building in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward onto pedestrians below.
On June 7 at around 2:45 p.m., a 33-year-old pregnant woman, who was pushing a baby stroller in front of the 32-story apartment complex in Tsukuda, sustained a minor injury to her shoulder after she was hit by a full PET bottle, police said. In a second incident that occurred just before 7 p.m. on Monday, a PET bottle was again thrown from the same building, Fuji TV reported.
A local resident spotted the boy at the window and notified police.
Police said Thursday the boy admitted throwing the bottles out the window of his apartment and said he did it to ease his stress, even though he knew someone might get hurt. The boy said he wasn’t get on with his parents.
Local residents said that since March, PET bottles and vases have been found on the ground on a number of occasions.

今回は、The Japan Timesの見出しから取り上げます。
Government defends bills after shellacking
拾い上げる英語表現は、“shellac”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「〜にシェラックを塗る、〜をたやすく打ち負かす」と記載されていました。ここでは、後者の意味で用いられています。シェラックは、ラックカイガラムシ、およびその近縁の数種のカイガラムシの分泌する虫体被覆物を精錬して得られる樹枝状の物質であります。今回の場合では、打ち負かすから、「反論」と捉えてもいいと思います。法案がどうなるか今後情報を得ていきたいです。(Nao)
wellspring 復習
私の研究に関連する論文から単語を取り上げます。文献の中で気になった単語は"wellspring"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「水源,（知識などの）泉」などという意味がありました。ここでは「源泉」と訳しました。この論文ではほかにも"feedstock"「（機械への）供給原料」という単語が出てきますが，これも「源泉」という意味で捉えているようです。
この文献は"intangible resources"という用語を整理したものになります。この用語は，さまざまな意味で用いられているため，しっかりと意味を確認をするために翻訳しておりました。従来，会計の分野では有形資産(tangible assets)の把握と管理に重点が置かれていましたが，無形の資産(intangible assets)の影響力が大きくなっているため，これらをどう測定し，管理していくのかがトピックの一つになっております。（Ume）

Messaging app Line launches music streaming business
Messaging app operator Line Corp launched its music streaming service in Japan on Thursday, getting a head start in the virtually untapped business for mobile music subscriptions in the world’s second-biggest music market.
Line’s move marks the most ambitious attempt yet to reverse the declining market for digital music in Japan, where compact discs still account for more than 80 percent of total music sales. Hobbled by rights issues, foreign companies have yet to break into Japan’s music streaming business.
Available for Android and iPhone users, the service, called Line Music, will offer unlimited access to a library of more than 1.5 million songs initially for a monthly fee of 1,000 yen, or 20 hours of access for half that. Line, Japan’s largest social network with 58 million registered domestic users, said in a statement it would offer the service for free for the first two months.
今回取り上げる単語は“hobble”です。以前も取り上げられていたのですが、その際の「よろよろ歩く」ではなく、「…を妨げる≪通例受身≫」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“to deliberately make sure that a plan, system etc cannot work successfully”（LDOCE）という意味で、文中では「著作権の問題にはばまれ，〜で停滞を余儀なくされ」という風に訳せるのではないかと思いました。6月11日から8月9日まで２ヶ月間無料トライアルキャンペーンを実施しているそうです。（Green）

precinct 復習
The Japan Newsで明治神宮に奉納されているワインにまつわる記事が掲載されています。先日、明治神宮に足を運んだ際、ワイン樽が並んでいることを不思議に思っていたこともあり、すっかり面白く読むことができました。

今回は“precinct”を拾い上げます。「1.［通例〜ｓ］(協会・公共物などの)構内 2.(〜ｓ)付近・郊外 3.《米》投票区；警察管区 4.《英》専用区域 5.［通例〜ｓ］境界(線)」などその語義は様々ありますが(『G3』より)、今回は最初の意味が適当でしょう。明治神宮は神社ですから、ここでは「境内」と訳すとしっくりきます。

今回取り上げるのは、“skim off”という表現です。“skim”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to move along quickly over a surface, never touching it or not touching it often”という定義が見つかりました。また、“skim off”の形では「（液体の）上澄みをすくう、取る（Weblio英和辞典）」といった意味がありました。そのため、今回の記事では「（香川選手のコーナーキックが）相手DFの頭をかすめ、そのボールを槙野選手が押し込んだ」となります。(ninetails)
have a frog in one's throat 復習
昨日あたりから喉が痛み始めてきました。特に、朝起きてすぐは声がかすれた感じで、喉がイガイガとした感じがします。
そこで、このような状態のことを何というか調べてみると、面白い言い方で“have a frog in one's throat”というのを発見しました。これは「声がかすれた、ガラガラ声」という言い方もできます。
“frog”を『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』で調べてみると、「声のしわがれ」と載っていました。
この表現ができた説として、飲んだ水の中に入っていたカエルの卵が、孵化し、喉まで上がってきて、気管をつまらしたため、一時的に声が出なくなったというある説があるそうで、他にも様々な説があるようです。(lua)

全世界で普及しているtwitterのCEOであるディック・コストロ氏が辞任を発表しました。なお、辞任の理由は明らかにされておらず次のCEOが決まるまでの間ジャック・ドーシー会長が兼任するようです。

記事の中で気になったのは”snippet”です。”snippet”は「（（略式））（情報・ニュース・会話・書き物などの）断片、短い抜粋」とありました。「『ジ―ニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店」加えて、”snippet”は”snip”の名詞形であり”snip”はもともとはさみを使って切る音を原義とします。“snip”には英略式ですが「買い得品、格安品」という意味もあるようです。LDOCEには” a small piece of news, information, or conversation”と記されています。
辞任の理由は業績の伸び悩みに関してコストロ氏が責任を取る形になったという見方もされているようです。（faith）
