A shallow, magnitude 6.4 earthquake early Sunday killed at least 10 people and injured 40 on Indonesia’s Lombok Island, a popular tourist destination next to Bali, officials said.

The quake damaged dozens of single-story houses and taller buildings and was felt in a wider area, including in Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 7 kilometers.

pristine /prístiːn/ を取り上げます。後ろにくるbeaches and mountainsをふまえると、美しいという意味になるのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「元のままの；真新しい、汚れのない」とありました。 “in pristine condition” の形では「（中古品などが）新品同様の、ほとんどまっさらの」という意味になります。

　LDOCEには “extremely fresh or clean” や “something that is pristine is in the same condition as when it was first made” とあり、他にも “not spoiled or damaged in any way” と定義されています。

　語源を調べると、goo辞書にはラテン語のpristinusからきており、「早い」という意味を表すことばであると説明されていました。この記事では、人の手がつけられていない美しいままの海や山のことをpristineで表現していると考えられます。（aqua）
