AOMORI--A lifelike model tuna is making the rounds at Aomori Airport here--on the baggage-collection conveyor belt--and images of it have gone viral on social networking sites.
The glistening fish even bears a tag on the pallet, an official sticker inscribed with the words “Oma Maguro,” meaning it had been given the stamp of approval by the fisheries cooperative association in Oma, Aomori Prefecture.

“inscribe”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「«石・硬貨・紙などに»〈言葉〉を刻みつける、書く«on, in»；«言葉を»〈墓石など〉に刻む、書く«with»」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to carefully cut, print, or write words on something, especially on the surface of a stone or coin”と定義されています。“inscribe”は“in-”と“-scribe”に分解することができ、それぞれ「内側へ」、「書く」という意味があります。この“-scribe”という語は様々な単語に含まれており、例を一つ上げると、“subscribe”があります。“sub-”には「下に、下位の」という意味があり、“-scribe”と合わせると「書類の下部に署名する」と解釈することができます。そこから「定期購読する」という意味が生まれています。他にも“-scribe”を含む表現は複数あるので、調べてみてください。(Blue Sky)
