Omar, perhaps world's longest cat, finds internet fame

Ms Hirst started a social media account for Omar two weeks ago and one of her photos was shared on the Cats of Instagram account more than 270,000 times.

The typically placid pet has since been featured in major Australian newspapers and on national TV.

"He hasn't really been coping with all the attention," Ms Hirst told the BBC. "He had a little bit of a meltdown this morning."

　今回はmeltdownを取り上げます。カタカナ英語として日本でも聞くことがありますが、この記事ではどのように使用されているのでしょうか。

Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “an accident in a nuclear reactor in which the fuel overheats and melts the reactor core or shielding”と “a disastrous collapse or breakdown”の二つの定義が載っておりました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「融解，溶融」、「株価の急暴落」や「（組織などの）崩壊」などが載っておりました。その中に「冷静さを失うこと」、「かっとなること」という意味も記載されておりました。

文脈から「興奮気味であった」というニュアンスで使用されていると考えました。（Gomez）
