　frontrunnerを取り上げます。直訳で考えると「前を走っている人」になりますが、そこから先駆者のようなイメージがわきます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引いてみると、 “front-runner” の形で「（競走などの）先頭集団の走者（馬）、有力候補、本命」という意味が見つかりました。記事の内容から、電池を長持ちさせる技術を売りとしていることが伺えます。

　LDOCEでは “the person or thing that is most likely to succeed in a competition” と定義されています。

　語源をOnline Etymology Dictionary で調べると “also frontrunner, of political candidates, 1908, American English, a metaphor from horse racing (where it is used by 1901 of a horse that runs best while in the lead).” と説明されており、競馬で馬が走る様子が選挙にも重ねられたということがわかりました。（aqua）
