Todaiji pulls out stops for festival honoring early Emperor Shomu
NARA--The famed Todaiji temple here paid homage to its founder, the eighth century Emperor Shomu, with a procession May 2 that featured participants in colorful ancient court attire to the delight of hordes of tourists.
The Emperor Shomu Festival was held to mark the death of the emperor 1,261 years ago when this city was the capital.
Shomu (701-756) commissioned the construction of the renowned temple and its 15-meter-high Great Buddha statue.

“homage”/(h)άmɪdʒ/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「«…に対する敬意、尊敬 «to»」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“formal something you do to show respect for someone or something you think is important”と定義されています。今回の記事では“pay homage to A”の形で用いられていますが、「Aに敬意を払う」と訳すことができるそうです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。 尊敬する作品などをまねることを「オマージュ」といいますが、これは今回の“homage”にあたります。(Blue Sky)
