balmy 復習

平年は2月以降に咲き始める梅ですが、今年は暖かい気候が続いた影響で、既に見頃となっているところもあるようです。

A bridge through the blossoms

Visitors appreciate the fully blooming plum flowers at Atami Baien plum garden in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Wednesday. Japanese plums usually start blossoming in February or later. Many buds this season, however, burst open from December through January due to balmy weather. Organizers of plum festivals across the nation are anxious over whether the plum trees will remain beautiful until the end of the events.

今回取り上げるのはbalmy /ˈbɑːmi / です。以前英検プリントでは、香油、香膏、鎮痛剤などを意味するbalmが出てきました。balmyはその形容詞形で、『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「（空気などが）快い、うららかな、さわやかな」とありました。

LDOCEには “balmy air, weather etc is warm and pleasant” と定義されております。

今回記事では “due to balmy weather” となっており、季節外れの穏やかな陽気が梅の開花を早めたことが理由として挙げられています。
