Avalanche fears in western Japan with no let-up in heavy snowfall

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of possible avalanches in western Japan as heavy snow continued to fall, making traffic conditions especially hazardous.

More snow was forecast due to a cold pressure system over the Sea of Japan through Feb. 12.

In the city of Shobara, Hiroshima Prefecture, snow had accumulated to a depth of 126 centimeters in places as of midnight on Feb. 10. Tottori, the capital of the prefecture of the same name, was blanketed with 62 cm of snow, and Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, also in western Japan, had 16 cm of snow.

　今回取り上げる表現はtreacherous /ˈtretʃərəs/ です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』で引いてみると、「1裏切りをする（ような）、不誠実な　2（道などが安全なように見えて実は）危険な、危ない」とありました。記事では山沿いの地域について述べられており、2つ目の意味が適するかと思われます。treacherousの名詞形であるtreacheryには、裏切り、反逆、背信行為などの意味があり、語源はtrickと同じで古期フランス語で「だます」の意からきていることがわかりました。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）

　LDOCEには “ground, roads, weather conditions etc that are treacherous are particularly dangerous because you cannot see the dangers very easily” とあり、すぐには危険だと分からないことがポイントのようです。この表現は過去にも何度か取り上げられておりました。
